Our Forest

In the year 2000, Hautapu Pine made a strategic move by acquiring a 940ha farm in the Apiti district, conveniently located just 50 minutes from our mill. Out of the 700 effective hectares, 560ha has been planted in Radiata Pine. The first trees were planted in 2000 and the land was progressively planted each year with the last trees being planted in 2010.

Our forest employs a unique planting strategy, with trees deliberately placed closer together than conventional forests. This intentional spacing serves to suppress the natural growth of the trees and minimises branches. Thus the forest produces small diameter logs with small sized knots that are ideal for post production.

Initially GF19 seedlings were planted.  We transitioned to clonal seedlings from 2006 onward, the exceptional performance of these clonal seedlings led us to exclusively adopt them for all subsequent plantings.

The full-time harvesting operation in our forest commenced in 2017, marking a pivotal moment in our journey. The logs harvested from this forest are a key source of small-diameter rounds for our mill.
